Among our favorite releases of the year so far was a Reserve Lot geshaGesha (Geisha)A rare, jasmine-and-bergamot scented variety originally from Ethiopia's Gesha forest, made famous by Panama's Hacienda La Esmeralda. Routinely the most expensive coffee at auction. from producer Jose Joaquin Bolaños that we shared back in January. Unlike many geshas we’ve tasted from Huila in years past, we were surprised by the vibrant acidityAcidityThe bright, lively, fruit-like sensation in coffee — praise, not a flaw. Citric sparkle, malic apple-crispness, tartaric wine notes; light roasts preserve more of it. and fruit-driven complexity we found in the cup. With that in mind, it came as no surprise to hear that a separate gesha lot from Jose took first place in the southern region at the 2025 Copa de Oro competition. We find similar qualities in this award winning lot: juicy black cherry and Meyer lemon, as well as comforting browning sugars and additional stone fruit flavors that emerge as the coffee cools.
