Region: Bubanza Elevation: 1700 masl VarietyVariety (cultivar)The botanical subtype of the coffee plant — Gesha, Bourbon, SL28 — analogous to grape varieties in wine. A major driver of cup character alongside origin and process.: Red BourbonBourbonOne of the two foundational arabica varieties (with Typica), named after Île Bourbon (Réunion). Sweet, balanced, caramel-leaning; parent of countless modern cultivars. Process: WashedWashed processThe fruit is removed from the seed before drying, usually with fermentation and a water rinse. Tends to give clean, transparent cups where origin character shows clearly. Notes: Panela, red apple, soft florals, & juicyAcidityThe bright, lively, fruit-like sensation in coffee — praise, not a flaw. Citric sparkle, malic apple-crispness, tartaric wine notes; light roasts preserve more of it. About: Rusekabuye means ‘man who hits stone with head and breaks it into one thousand pieces’. It is the youngest of the washing stations in the Akawa project and perhaps the most picturesque. Hilare, one of the owners of Rusekabuye, was lobbied by producers in the region to build it as he has a great reputation for being fair. At the time, there was only one other station in operation and it wasn’t treating the producers well. Although Hilare was threatened by the other station owner, the farming community wouldn’t let him back down. In 2017 Rusekabuye was finished and since then it has processed two harvests. We look forward to supporting it through many more.
