The estate is named after Oreti Beach in New Zealand, where Boyce’s grandparents met for the first time. In 1961 Peter decided to plant 17 hectares of the SL14 coffee varietyVariety (cultivar)The botanical subtype of the coffee plant — Gesha, Bourbon, SL28 — analogous to grape varieties in wine. A major driver of cup character alongside origin and process. despite it being difficult to grow because he felt it tasted the best out of all the SL (Scott Labs) varieties. Now, Oreti Estate is one of, if not the last place in Kenya growing SL14. This lot was processed via the naturalNatural processThe whole cherry is dried with the fruit still on the seed. Gives heavier body and big fruit flavors — think berries and wine — sometimes with a fermenty edge. method, still very rare in Kenya. Whole coffee cherries are spread out onto raised beds to be sun-dried shortly after being picked. This results in a sweeter and very fruity coffee.
