In the Mantiqueira de Minas region, specialty coffee is very much a family business. Sitio Capim Seco is managed by Ciro Dias Pereira , brother of Luiz Paulo – founder of Carmo Coffee s , and whose coffee we purchased in this year’s Cup of ExcellenceCup of Excellence (COE)A national competition and auction that identifies a country's best lots each year; winning 'COE' lots command dramatic price premiums. auction. Ciro is also the grandson of Isidro and Nazareth Pereira, whose coffee we purchased through the most recent Cocarive auction. Ciro recently took over management of the farm, from another of his brothers, Rafael – who stepped away from the family business to pursue his other passion, breeding horses. Specialty coffee is in the Pereira family’s blood and their roots in the region are deep. Asked about his motivation, Ciro is transparent: “ It’s in the blood. The coffee passes through our family from generation to generation. Seeing our coffees continue to be recognized for their high quality, that’s what motivates me.” Because Fazenda Capim Seco is relatively small (35 hectares of coffee – large for the rest of the world, but small by Brazilian standards), coffees from the farm are processed at the family run mill, Fazenda Irmãs .
