Origin Story We have been sourcing organic coffee from members of Mexican cooperative CEPCO since 2002. Historically, that has meant sourcing the elegant BourbonBourbonOne of the two foundational arabica varieties (with Typica), named after Île Bourbon (Réunion). Sweet, balanced, caramel-leaning; parent of countless modern cultivars. and TypicaTypicaThe oldest cultivated arabica lineage, ancestor of most Latin American coffee. Low yield, clean and sweet cup; the baseline other varieties are measured against. cultivars they grow in the shade of multi-story forest canopies across the rugged mountains of Oaxaca. When the coop raised GeishaGesha (Geisha)A rare, jasmine-and-bergamot scented variety originally from Ethiopia's Gesha forest, made famous by Panama's Hacienda La Esmeralda. Routinely the most expensive coffee at auction. seedlings and distributed them to members six years ago, we began working with them on plans to separate their Geisha production from the other varieties they grow. This lot represents the culmination of those efforts, our first smallholderSmallholderA farmer growing coffee on a small family plot — often under two hectares. Most of the world's coffee is grown this way, typically pooled at cooperatives or washing stations. Geisha lot from members of the CEPCO cooperative, but almost certainly not our last.
