Character
Las Perlitas translates to “Little Pearls,” an ode to the small, high-quality lots produced by individual smallholdersSmallholderA farmer growing coffee on a small family plot — often under two hectares. Most of the world's coffee is grown this way, typically pooled at cooperatives or washing stations. across Huila, Colombia that are often too limited in volume to be exported on their own. While these microlots are frequently excluded for logistical reasons, their cup quality regularly rivals — and sometimes exceeds — that of much larger single-producer offerings. Las Perlitas is composed primarily of Pink BourbonBourbonOne of the two foundational arabica varieties (with Typica), named after Île Bourbon (Réunion). Sweet, balanced, caramel-leaning; parent of countless modern cultivars., with smaller contributions from CaturraCaturraA natural dwarf mutation of Bourbon found in Brazil: compact plants, easier picking, bright and clean cup. A workhorse across Latin America. and occasional GeishaGesha (Geisha)A rare, jasmine-and-bergamot scented variety originally from Ethiopia's Gesha forest, made famous by Panama's Hacienda La Esmeralda. Routinely the most expensive coffee at auction.. We’re excited to carry Las Perlitas again this season, a coffee we’ve come to rely on for both quality and consistency year over year. We find this season’s iteration to be a bit more wineyFunky / lacticTasting language for deliberate fermentation flavor: yogurt-like tang (lactic), winey or boozy notes, overripe fruit. A feature in experimental lots, a defect in classic ones. than in the past, balanced by the caramelized sweetness of baked peaches. Region Huila < Colombia Altitude 1600-2000 MASL Process WashedWashed processThe fruit is removed from the seed before drying, usually with fermentation and a water rinse. Tends to give clean, transparent cups where origin character shows clearly. Varietal Pink bourbon, Caturra, Gesha
