The Thunguri washing stationWashing stationA central mill where many smallholder farmers deliver cherry for processing. In Ethiopia, Kenya, and Rwanda the station name (e.g. Idido) often identifies the coffee., or ‘factory' as they are called in Kenya, collects and processes cherries delivered by over 1,000 small scale farmers located in Nyeri County in central Kenya. This is one of several lots that Passenger had the opportunity to purchase from the “Retro 1984” project: a fascinating collaborative endeavor developed by our friends Peter Mbature, Tim Hill, and Lance Schnorenberg. Most of the lots purchased in the inaugural year of the project were produced by single farmer estates, however, a few were sourced from top-performing factories that expressed interest in participating. Slightly less celebrated but hardier, with a similar juicy, complex cup., is an example of the latter category. A uniquely sweet Kenyan coffee, we find flavors of fresh bing cherry and candied lime peel in the cup, as well as an intriguing vanilla-like finish that reminds us of cream soda.
