Character
Our newest offering, Red 5 de Diciembre, is the result of an incredible amount of effort and collaboration. The Red 5 de Diciembre network was founded out of a need to save coffee farming in the La Cañada region of Oaxaca. In 2014, La Roya, or coffee leaf rust, swept through La Cañada, creating instability in coffee production and international market interest. On December 5, 2014, a cooperative of 13 community groups came together to help unite 1,300 indigenous coffee farmers to help rebuild coffee production in the area. Over the following six years, producers of Red 5 worked through selective harvesting and specialty processing to bolster confidence in their region, even receiving organic certification along the way. And in 2020, Red 5 de Diciembre teamed up with Ensembles de Café, which has allowed for continued improvement in coffee quality through their cuppingCuppingThe standardized tasting ritual — coarse grounds steeped in hot water, crust broken, slurped from a spoon — used to score and compare coffees. team and specialty experience. We are so fortunate to be able to share the labors of Red 5 de Diciembre’s hard work with you all. We always look forward to the new crop of Red 5, but this crop is something special.
